Fun with color
I: Color basics – Where does color come from and how does it work? Learn the fundamentals of color and explore color mixing and relationships by making color wheel collages, color layering paintings, and value drawings.
II: Make your colors better - Explore how colors react with each other, and discover the possibilities color has to offer. We will use drawing, painting, and collage to help you play with and understand color and value. We’ll make a city painting inspired by Paul Klee, fun positive negative collages, and color scheme paintings.
III: Expressive color – Apply your skills learned from the previous blocks and use color to create beautiful expressive artworks. We will learn how to express emotions and ideas through form and color by making music paintings, Impressionist landscapes, and more.
The art of prints
I: Stamps – Think of Andy Warhol’s images of soup cans and Marilyn Monroe. These were made possible by using printmaking techniques. We will explore the process of printmaking and have fun creating unique stamp designs made of materials like carved potatoes, found objects, Styrofoam, and ourselves.
II: Stencils and graffiti – Many artists have used stencils to create artwork, including street art, sign making, and screenprinting t-shirts. These were made possible by using printmaking techniques, a way to create duplicate images. We will explore how to create patterns through repeating shapes to make a new image. Using stencils, we will explore patterns and graffiti art as we discover the process of creating images through printmaking.
III Carve your own plate- Looking at printmakers from the past and present as inspiration, we will plan and create a large complex rubber stamp that can be printed over and over. This project is the culmination of printing techniques learned through stamping, stencils, and pattern making. We will use drawing activities to create a design, which will be used for carving and printing a linoleum plate for our finished artwork. This class project will take us from the initial idea and planning stages all the way through to the completion of a finished product.
